Sturdie Secure Technologies delivered a nationwide CCTV upgrade for the Spotlight Retail Group, which includes Spotlight and Anaconda brands, operating one of Australia’s largest retail networks. The project addressed the significant challenge of protecting staff, customers, property, and stock across stores with high foot traffic, expansive layouts, and diverse infrastructure.
The rollout involved assessing, planning, designing, and installing a uniform CCTV system across 102 Spotlight stores and 24 Anaconda outlets. Each installation included cameras, network video recorders, and store entry monitors, tailored to the specific conditions of each site while maintaining network-wide consistency.
The project faced multiple challenges, including the geographical spread of stores across Australia and New Zealand, coordination of site visits and local installation technicians, dispatching bulky and fragile equipment, and scheduling works around trading hours and peak retail periods. The diverse existing infrastructure at stores also required careful assessment to integrate usable equipment where possible, achieving cost efficiencies.
To address these challenges, Sturdie undertook bulk design, engineering, and programming centrally at its South Australian facility, producing site-specific solutions while ensuring consistency across all locations. Close communication with store managers minimised disruption, and on-site training plus quick-reference guides equipped staff to operate the new systems. Additional enhancements included the installation or upgrade of monitored intruder alarm systems.
The project involved over 1,600 cameras, 117 network video recorders, 208 kilometres of cabling, almost 12,000 hours of physical installation, and 4,500 hours of management and administration. Works were completed ahead of schedule and under budget, delivering modern, reliable, and user-friendly CCTV systems across all Spotlight and Anaconda stores.
