Star Casino Transformer Project

“The Star Gold Coast is located in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, Queensland. The seven-acre integrated resort features more than 1,000 hotel rooms, suites and apartments, 11 restaurants, 6 bars, casino, extensive conference facilities, a ballroom, theatre, health spa and gym.”

Sturdie QLD was engaged to deliver a critical infrastructure upgrade involving the replacement of six existing 2MVA oil-filled transformers with new 2MVA dry-type transformers. The project also included upgrades to the existing substations to ensure full compliance with the latest AS2067 standard, while maintaining the operational requirements of a live, high-profile precinct.

The substation upgrade program was delivered through a carefully staged shutdown methodology, with each transformer replaced individually. Works included upgrades to mechanical services and the earthing system; HV isolation switching and associated documentation; infrared testing of existing HV cables; re-termination of HV and LV cables onto the new transformers; completion of full site commissioning and testing of the new dry-type transformers and associated cabling; and final HV switching and documentation to safely re-energise each system.
